What's the Difference Between Botox® and Dysport?

Results of Botox Treatments

Botox and Dysport are both popular injectable treatments used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Wrinkles are a product of time and add to our character and tell a story of where we have been. However, we all want to tell that story, but not too much!

These safe, minimally invasive cosmetic injectables halt muscle movement that leads to wrinkle formation. This is why they are often called “Wrinkle Treatments” or “Wrinkle Relaxers”. This article will provide you with a side-by-side comparison of Botox and Dysport, and allow you to make the most informed choice possible.

How are botox and dysport different?

First, why does Dysport require three times as many units as Botox?

A commonly cited reason is because the Dysport molecule is smaller than the Botox molecule-however, this is incorrect!

Both Botox and Dysport contain the same active ingredient: botulinum toxin. However, each of their botulinum toxins are surrounded by different proteins, which are placed there during the manufacturing process.

Because the proteins surrounding Dysport are removed differently than the ones surrounding Botox, it takes three times the number of units to provide the same biological activity as one unit of Botox. This does not matter in practice as we simply adjust this in our calculations!

One obvious reason you know the size difference does not affect the result is because Xeomin has the smallest molecule size of them all-about 1/6th the size of Botox and 1/5th the size of Dysport, yet has a 1:1 ratio with Botox!

Onset and Size

One of the main differences between Botox and Dysport is their molecular structure. Dysport has a smaller molecule size, which allows it to spread more easily and can make it more effective for treating larger areas like the forehead. Botox, on the other hand, has a larger molecule size, which can make it more precise and effective for treating smaller areas like crow's feet.

Another difference between the two treatments is the onset of their effects. Dysport tends to take effect more quickly than Botox, with results appearing within 2-5 days, while Botox can take up to 7 days to show results. Both have maximum effect on day 14.

We do not however recommend making a choice based on an earlier or later onset, as this is different for everyone. And since the goal is 3-6 months of wrinkle reduction, what is just a few more days?!

Which Lasts Longer Botox or Dysport?

When it comes to the longevity of the effects, both treatments can last anywhere from 3-6 months, but this can vary depending on the individual and the area being treated. We often find people fall into two categories:

Two times per year, or every 6 months: People in this category are usually in their late 20’s to early 30’s. This frequency usually allows for adequate wrinkle prevention because the skin has more elasticity and quicker cell turnover.

Three times per year, or every 4 months: People in this category are usually in their mid-late 30’s and above. This frequency may be needed as wrinkles are quicker to form, and harder to fade, thus necessitating more frequent neurotoxin treatments.

Which is Cheaper Botox or Dysport?

In terms of cost, Dysport is generally less expensive than Botox. The cost of both treatments can vary depending on factors such as the injectors experience, the location of the practice, and the amount of product needed for the desired results. However, on average, Dysport tends to be priced at a slightly lower rate than Botox. This may make Dysport a more appealing option for those on a tighter budget or for those who require larger treatment areas.

In Austin, Texas, the average price of Botox is $12-$15 per unit, and the average price of Dysport is $4 per unit. The average total treatment cost is $600-$800.

It's important to keep in mind that while cost is a factor to consider, it should not be the only consideration when choosing between Botox and Dysport. The effectiveness and safety of the treatment should be the top priority, and a qualified provider can help determine which treatment is best suited for an individual's unique needs and budget.

Dysport Vs. Botox Which is Better?

Ultimately, the choice between Botox and Dysport will depend on the individual's goals and preferences, as well as the recommendations of their healthcare provider. Both treatments have been proven to be safe and effective for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and a consultation with one of our expert providers can help determine which treatment is right for you.
