What Is sculptra?

Sculptra® is an injectable dermal filler used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The product is composed of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is injected beneath the skin to give a fuller look. This acid serves as a stimulant for collagen production; collagen being an essential protein that offers structure, support, and strength in the skin, bones, connective tissues, and cartilage. PLLA is biocompatible, meaning it is safe for use in the body, and is slowly absorbed by the body over time. Sculptra is unique from other dermal fillers because it doesn't just add volume, but it also stimulates the body's natural collagen production.

How does Sculptra work?

When Sculptra is injected, it comes as a fine particle that looks similar to a small amount of baking soda mixed with water. The PLLA particles are suspended in a solution of sterile saline and are injected into deeper areas of the face where there is a loss of volume, such as the cheeks, temples, and jowls. Once injected, the Sculptra particles act as a scaffold, or support structure, for new collagen growth.

Collagen is a protein that is naturally produced by the body and is responsible for providing structure and support to the skin. As we age, our collagen production slows down, leading to a loss of volume and elasticity in the skin. Sculptra works by stimulating the body to produce new collagen, which fills in the areas of volume loss and improves the overall appearance of the face or body.

Sculptra injections FAQs

Who is a candidate for Sculptra?

A candidate for Sculptra is someone looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin or add volume to areas like the face, hips, and buttocks. Sculptra is FDA-approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It can also be used as a non-surgical cheek enhancement or to contour other parts of the face. Ideal candidates are in good health with realistic expectations about the outcome of treatment. Every year after the age of 25, we lose 1% of our collagen. This loss of collagen slowly over time is part of the reason for signs of aging, such as loss of fullness in the face and thinner skin. Because of this, the earlier you start using SCULPTRA, the easier it is to stay ahead of this collagen loss!

How much Sculptra do I need?

One common recommendation is:

  • First Year using Sculptra: Start with 1 Vial of Sculptra for every decade of life. So if you are 45 years old, you can start with 4 vials of SCULPTRA your first year.

  • Every Year After: 1-2 Vials of Sculptra for maintenance, spaced apart by 6 months.

Another common recommendation is 3 vials over the course of several months followed by 1 vial yearly.

How long until I see results after my Sculptra treatment?

Following a Sculptra treatment, you should start to notice changes in the elasticity and feel of your skin within seven days. The ideal and long-lasting results will be seen after an average of three treatments, taking place at intervals of four to six weeks apart. Gradually over the next four to six months, you will observe your results keep getting better until they reach their peak. This slow progress provides a more natural outcome than what is usually experienced with surgical procedures.

Is Sculptra safe?

Yes! Sculptra is a safe form of dermal filler approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sculptra in Austin is a safe and effective option for those who are looking to restore volume to their face and improve the overall appearance of their skin. Initially developed to help people suffering from AIDS and therefore immunocompromised with symptoms of cachexia, this Poly-L Lactic Acid has also been used in suture material since the 1970s with an excellent safety record.

Are there any side effects of Sculptra?

As with any kind of cosmetic treatment, there is always a risk of side effects or complications, although these are usually quite rare. The most common side effects that we see are bruising and swelling near the site of injections. This usually resolves in 24-48hrs. Other potential risks with Sculptra include redness, itching, and swelling at the injection site, lumps or bumps under the skin, and an uneven appearance. There is also the possibility of an infection at the injection site, though this is even rarer. Fortunately, many of these risks can be minimized with proper care and attention. To review all reported side effects, please see full prescribing information here.

Can Sculptra be used with dermal fillers or Botox/Dysport?

Yes, Sculptra can be used in combination with both dermal fillers and Botox/Dysport. Additionally, Sculptra is often times recommended instead of dermal filler due to its longer duration and more diffuse filling effects. it is essential to discuss your goals and expectations with your doctor before proceeding with any treatment.
