Laser Hair Removal at Maui MedSpa

Laser Hair Removal

At Maui MedSpa, we are excited to start offering laser hair removal! I wanted to share quick tidbits of information that I personally found helpful when looking into laser hair removal as an option.

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK

Laser hair removal (LHR) is a technique designed to remove unwanted hair. The laser targets the pigment in the hair, emitting a light that quickly converts to heat. The hair follicle absorbs the heat from the laser, traveling to the end of the hair follicle to inhibit hair growth. The pigment in the hair attracts the laser, so darker hair absorbs the laser more effectively, which is why people with dark hair and light skin are ideal candidates for laser hair removal. Patients with dark skin type, typically need to be treated with a specific laser that helps detect the hair against the skin. Those with light hair (blonde, gray or white hair) are not ideal candidates, because the laser can’t focus on nonpigmented hair.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Knowing your skin type and the type of laser being utilized is key to help determine if you are a good candidate for laser hair removal. You also want to know which type of laser will be used, as each laser is designed for specific skin type. The two most common lasers are the Alexandrite and the ND:Yag. Alexandrite is the gold standard and recommended for skin types 1-3. At times, Alexandrite can be used for skin type 4, but this can be determined after a consultation and completing a Fitzpatrick Skin Scale questonnaire. ND:Yag is also a well-known laser, that can be used for all skin types, but most often used for skin types 4-6. We currently use the Alexandrite at Maui MedSpa and will be adding ND:Yag in the near future!

HOW TO PREP BEFORE EACH LASER HAIR REMOVAL SESSION

Following the preparation instructions before your session will help improve the effectiveness of the treatment and reduce the risk of side effects. Common recommendations include: Avoid direct sunlight and sunless tanning products and discontinue photosensitive medications at least 7 days before treatment. Avoid waxing, plucking or tweezing, as this will remove the hair follicle that we're trying treat. You will need to shave the area you would like treated the evening before or the day of your appointment.

WHAT TO KNOW AFTER LASER HAIR REMOVAL SESSION

Recovery time is minimal, your skin may be sensitive shortly after treatment, but using Aloe Vera can help. Avoid hot water, baths, saunas for at least 48 hours afterwards. On day three, you can gently exfoliate the treated area. Avoid plucking, tweezing, waxing between sessions, as this can delay the results. Generally, it takes three weeks for you to start seeing results, and follow up sessions are scheduled every 4-12 weeks. It’s key to be consistent with follow up sessions, in order to have great results.

I hope you guys found this information helpful! A thorough consultation is important, please let me know if you have any questions. Would love to hear from you and hopefully see you soon at Maui MedSpa for laser hair removal!
